Robertson Geotechnical is experienced in the complex geologic environments both along the beach and the hillsides of southern California and how they impact development. Southern California geologic conditions have been complicated by past grading prior to adoption of modern codes. A thorough understanding of the geology is necessary to assess properties.

Beach & Coastal Projects

Numerous projects have been performed along the coast from Santa Monica, along the Pacific Palisades and throughout the Malibu Beach community. Projects have included additions and modifications of existing beachfront homes, new beachfront developments, and shoreline protection devices.

Hillside & Inland Projects

Hillside developments in the Los Angeles area have been performed in communities from Woodland Hills to Hollywood to Pasadena and Glendale. Projects have involved hillside grading and construction over natural slopes and considered the geologic conditions unique to California hillsides.

Project Considerations

The suitability of sites for private sewage disposal systems and their impact on site stability have been considered in the evaluations. Studies have determined feasible development approaches that consider safe and stable sites and the requirements of the Building Codes.

Damage Assessment

The causes of damage to developed properties have been determined for sites throughout California. The scope of work performed has included visual evaluation of damage to comprehensive studies to arrive at methods for repair and stabilization. Treatments for fill settlement, expansive soil movement and slope instability are tailored to the magnitude of the hazard and the client’s desired level of performance of the improvement. The extent of property damage associated with heavy rainfall and major earthquakes in northern and southern California has been determined along with advice to repair the damage.

Project Locations

The majority of our projects have involved southern California developments from Santa Barbara to San Diego. Investigations of properties have been performed to evaluate:
